Mirrung Mittigar - Riverwood Public School Preschool

Why choose our public preschool?

Our public preschool is a fee-free preschool at Riverwood Public School. It’s an easy choice for local families with young children.

We give every child the start in early childhood education. At our preschool, children explore, ask questions and grow in a safe and caring place. Our friendly team helps each child learn and feel good through fun, hands-on play that builds confidence and curiosity.

We look forward to welcoming you and your child to our preschool. Contact us to talk to our team, book a tour or join our waitlist.

Mirrung Mittigar - Riverwood Public School Preschool philosophy 2026

Mirrung Mittigar, means belonging with friends.

At Mirrung Mittigar, we acknowledge the Bidjigal People of the Dharug Nation who were here before us and we respect the land our preschool is on. We honour the traditional owners in our daily Yarning Circle and commit to respecting the land on which we work, play and learn.

We believe that it is our responsibility to create culturally safe places, working side by side and connecting with our families and community through sharing aspects of culture and language, to create secure, respectful and reciprocal relationships.

We believe that educators, families, and children play an important and active role in creating and promoting sustainable practices and communities. Connections and partnerships with the families underpin what we do, and we nurture relationships that respect the diversity of our families and communities to support and enhance children becoming unique individuals through learning and growing.

The NQF and the EYLF are embedded in our program. We actively promote each child’s sense of Belonging, Being & Becoming through providing an environment that is safe and welcoming for all children and their families with educators who model, scaffold and extend children's learning by

• Building on literacy understandings and extending their language, vocabulary and communication.

• Exploring mathematical understanding through building early numeracy skills

• Exploring scientific ideas through thinking questioning and play

We believe that children initiate, build and sustain positive relationships with educators and one another to enhance and support their learning. We have a strong commitment to equity, inclusion and high expectations underpinned by code of ethics, trauma informed practice and child safe standards.

Children are valued as unique individuals who are capable, competent, resourceful, resilient and valued members of our learning community. Children actively participate in play-based learning experiences and have many ways of seeing the world, and need opportunities to make meaning through both explicit teaching & discovery learning. We feel they benefit from long periods of sustained uninterrupted learning and being in the moment which allows for expression of personality and uniqueness.

It is important to offer experiences that are open-ended, encouraging the children to make choices and be creative. Children are given opportunities to experiment, discover, explore, question, hypothesise, think independently and contribute their knowledge and ideas.

Our flexible responsive teaching and learning environment is based on children’s interest and skills to support children to be engaged and build knowledge and insights. They learn to solve problems individually through exploration and repetitive experiences and as part of a group building on the skills of communication, cooperation and collaboration.

Paramount consideration is given to protecting the rights and the best interests of each child.

We believe that this Philosophy is a living document and will change through critical reflection of practice.

Preschool days and hours

Our preschool is open for 6 hours a day, on the same days as all NSW public schools. To learn about our preschool hours, please contact us.

Fees

We do not charge fees to attend our preschool. NSW public preschools are funded by the NSW government.

Attendance

Public preschools enrol children for one year only, the year before they start school.

Children can enrol from the beginning of the school year if they turn 4 years of age before 31 July that year.

Children bring their own meals and snacks to preschool. For more information, please contact us.

How to enrol

Our Preschool program accepts children for one year only, in the year before they start school. To be eligible, children must turn 4 years old by July 31st of that year.

We offer a 5-day fortnight program during school hours, from 9:00am to 2:55pm, with only 20 places available in each program to ensure personalised attention and a quality learning experience.

Expressions of Interest open in February of the year before your child starts preschool. Please complete the Expression of Interest Form below and submit it to the school office.

Parents will be contacted in October to confirm placements for the following year. Before starting, new families are invited to attend an orientation session to help children settle into preschool smoothly.

Enrolling in a preschool within a school does not guarantee a place at that school for Kindergarten.
